Forensic Epidemiology: Joint Training for Law Enforcement and Public Health Officials
Goal This course aims to provide both public health professionals and law enforcement officers with information on forensic epidemiology methods, operations and procedures during responses and investigations, and effective communication between public health and law enforcement officials. Course Length: 2 ½ hours Intended Audience The intended audiences for this course are groups of law enforcement officers and public health professionals who want to learn how to work together in investigating disease outbreaks that are or may also be crimes, bioterrorism events, or other deliberately caused outbreaks. Course Content There are four modules in this course: • Module 1: Public Health Epidemiology for Law Enforcement Officials • Module 2: Criminal Investigation for Public Health Professionals • Module 3: The Role of the Laboratory - Public Health and Forensic • Module 4: Working Together on Investigations After completing these modules, you will be presenting with three case studies. Problems and questions will be discussed and you may also involve in a discussion board for in-depth discussion regarding the case studies. There are practice exercises at the end of each module. These practice exercises will provide you with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills presented in these modules. There is a post-test at the end of case studies.
Forensic Epidemiology Part 1
This presentation by Pia MacDonald, PhD, MPH, Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Project Director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness and Sally Mountcastle, MSPH, PhD candidate in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will give you an overview of both Epidemiology and Forensic Epidemiology. Target Audience These learning modules are applicable to all public health, medical, veterinary, pharmacy, emergency management, hospital and other professionals interested in public health preparedness. These modules are created by faculty and guest lecturers at the UNC-CH School of Public Health and are equivalent to graduate level content. Educational Objectives Define Epidemiology and understand ways in which it has, and continues to be used in public health Define Forensic Epidemiology; understand why discipline began, direction it is going, and challenges it faces Understand public health's role in investigating natural outbreaks of disease and that certain unusual or unnatural findings in an investigation may suggest intentional criminal actions.
